Brief 7 - Concept Development

I looked over the work I had done, and while I am happy with the visual design, I am not too convinced about the concept. While I do think I could do it well, I'm not sure it is the most creative or interesting idea to do for this brief as it is such an open brief and I should push myself to do whatever I want instead of doing something I have done a few times before.

On this reflection, I decided that I would change the concept from a campaign to creating promotion and collateral for a sci-fi convention held by the brand. I think that this concept gives me much more room to work and be creative, especially as I will now be able to create an identity for this convention and create collateral instead of just creating a series of posters and digital designs. It means I can create something physical.

Taking the designs I had previously done, I started working it around the concept of being a promotional poster for the convention, changing the information to fit the convention instead of just being promotion for the channel. I also changed the bottom corner branding to white on purple. to fit in more with the footer.

I created a logo for the convention, deciding on using circles as it relates to stars and suns, like in space. I incorporated the three colours I had been using in the footer - blue, purple and pink. At the minute I haven't got a name for the convention, so just went with 'convention' until I can think of something. I did get rid of 'the beating heart of sci-fi', and while I liked this tagline, I do think that there was just a bit too much going on.

I tried this design on two images - the first, the same as before of the solar flare - the second is just of a star sky, still relating to the sci-fi angle. I also tried two slightly different layouts.

I think both work well, however the second does stand out a bit more and work better as the imagery is a bit more evenly spread and seems to contrast against all the elements a bit more.

Following this, I started to experiment with possible logo ideas. While I like the original logo designed, experimenting with it is important to make sure I am moving forward with the best design for the concept.

I got a bit of feedback on the designs and it was agreed that the best was the full work with just the one circle in colour (middle left). It's simple and will stand out against whatever coloured imagery will be used.

With this decided, I applied it to the poster design, adding a drop shadow to it as I had with the rest of the text.

Overall I think that this looks like a more professional design and I think it is a good start for the identity of the convention. I like that there is a lot of space on the page and that each element is clear and presented with its own area. I still think the branding for the convention needs work, but I like how it is going at the minute.
