Brief 2 - Meeting

Today Charlie and I met up to discuss our collaborative. As there have been group briefs the past week, we've been unable to work on this so thought a meeting now was a good point to make the final decisions in terms of the logo and branding for the brand.

Logo

We looked over all the variations we each had, and decided on my cocoa bean icon with Charlie's name of 'Kakawa'.

We agreed that this best showed off what we wanted in the brand - luxurious, but authentic and relating to the origins of chocolate. We also decided on the dark brown colour with secondary colours in navy blue, and an off white.

Type

Once decided on the logo, we looked into the type for the brand. We first decided that the two typefaces in the logo - Gotham Bold & Pier - would only be used for the logo and headings and body copy would be different.

We started by looking into possible typefaces for body copy.

Of the five above, we initially had different opinions on which way to go. Charlie wanted to use a serif typeface, whereas I was much more inclined to used a sans serif typeface - reflective of the branding in the more contemporary look.

I brought up that if we had a sans serif header and serif type, it might look a bit strange, however doing it the other way around would work well. Charlie agreed with this thought, so we both started looking for serif typefaces online that we both liked that could possibly work. We agreed that we wanted a contemporary style serif typeface, but not one that was too radical.

We decided on Cambo - link

We felt that this was a good mix between traditional and contemporary, and we feel that it would work well with a sans serif body copy.

With this typeface chosen, we moved onto choosing one for body copy. We had already been through a wide selection of serif and sans serif typefaces to this point and decided on three for possibilities - Aller Light, Avenir Thin and PT Sans Regular.

We decided on Aller Light as it seems to work well written in small or large sections, and the kerning between letters seems to be very consistent and decent.

Brand guidelines

Following this, we moved onto discussing the brand guidelines and wrote a list of everything we needed to include.
General
  • About the brand
  • Origins of chocolate
  • Colours
  • Stock
Logo
  • Logo
  • Variations (Just colours)
  • Size (+ exclusion zones)
  • Do's & Dont's
  • Placement
Typography
  • Headings
  • Body Copy
  • Indexing
  • Alignment, justification etc.
Other
  • Use of imagery

Following this, we split these down for us both to complete half to get the work done quicker. This is done with the idea that we'd get the content done then format it together when we next meet.

We agreed that we'd each start initial design ideas as well. I will start on corporate identity, so stationary, and how the logo could be applied across a range of paper sizes etc. Charlie will be doing initial ideas for packaging. We will discuss our progress and complete the brand guidelines during our next meeting.
