We met up to discuss our initial ideas. Grace and Sam had come up with a concept of creating a personalised experience for the reader, having some kind of interactivity for them to be able to fully engage with the yearbook.
I suggested the idea of stickers as this is something that I have personally seen and used before in catalogues for brands. I have found it to be engaging and entertaining. Both Sam and Grace really liked this idea and we think it could work well in getting everyone fully engaged with the yearbook.
The audience is new students and potential employers, to being able to get them fully involved with it and feel like they are actually doing something is important. The use of stickers will also be something that they will remember and be a reminder for them if they were to look back at the yearbook in the future. Sam also suggested using bookmarks to be a way for readers to be able to bookmark specific pages that they particularly like. These two simple ideas working together is what we decided to move forward with.
With the stickers and bookmarks, we decided that the layouts needed to be simple and easy for a reader to look over. We didn't want so much going on, on the pages.
The use of a large margin was suggested so it gives space for the reader to be able to put their stickers without covering the work.
We also discussed the information that would be needed for each person. We decided on the following areas: Bio, Fun fact, Contact, Experience, Projects Featured. It's a good mix of information and keeping it a bit more personal and informal with the 'fun fact' being involved.
We each did our own layout ideas.
Initial layout ideas
I liked the idea of having full bleed images where possible, however with the decision to include a margin, the meant only the top and bottom of images could go off the edges of the page. I showed two possible variations of pages, shown above. The idea is that the text would always be on the left and could be at the top or bottom. The right page would always be purely imagery. The grid would allow for changes in the number of images, or their sizes/shapes. This helps with the personal element in that the layout can be adapted to everyones work.
We then had a discussion about our progress, and Grace suggested the idea of having circles for each project, where the reader can put their sticker if they like the piece of work. As well as this, we decided on orange being our main colour, along with black for the text and white for the stock.
Adapted layouts
I personally don't like the use of the circles, as I don't feel they're necessary. I think people are going to put stickers wherever they want and won't want to be told where to place them.
We agreed that we would each come up with a few sticker ideas, following the same guides in having white on orange, and using curved lines so there aren't any points. We will also experiment with typefaces that could be used.
Interim Pages
Another section that we wanted to add to the book is interim pages between the student profiles - some pages detailing moments that we all experienced as a year group, perhaps one from each year on the course.
We decided on the following sections:
- Typogateau
- Visiting Professionals
- Live briefs
We wanted these pages to be inverted from the others, so the page would be orange with white text etc. We would also experiment with the layout of these more as the content would be different to that on the profile pages.
Stickers
Working on the personalisation angle, the stickers will be sayings or imagery which represent a variety of responses to work - such as 'wish I thought of this' or 'amazing concept' etc.
