Hand drawn type is always something I have admired and wanted to be able to do myself. I've wanted to do a brief about it since the beginning of the second year but always ended up doing something else instead. I think that primarily this is down to the fact that I am inexperienced in this area of design and it will take a lot of work to become decent at it.
I have decided on learning the skill in this brief because I think the way the brief is, it is quite structured but relaxed at the same time. Starting it at the beginning of the year means that I have time to perhaps do the brief a couple of times over, or specific designs a couple of times over. This brief is primarily about my own self exploration in the hand drawn type world, and hopefully by the end I will have 30 good pieces of hand drawn type.
To start the brief off I did a brainstorm of everything I needed to know for this brief and the second part of the brief, which is creating the publication.
I think the main things that I need to work out before starting this brief is what styles of hand drawn type do I specifically want to learn, and what theme am I going with. These two things will keep me structured and organised. I know that if I don't choose a specific style of type for each day, I probably won't be as productive as I could be, so before I start this, I want a clear plan of what style I want to do in an order.
Theme is important because I want to be able to create design which isn't just random. At the minute I am leaning towards the idea of designing quotes about travel. I think that this theme is quite open ended. I originally had an idea of doing movie quotes, however I think that I would be having to focus more on typography to suit that specific film rather than what I want to learn, so doing a subject like travel or food, it leaves it quite open for me.
Something I also need to consider is how in depth I want to go. I could leave this at just 30 days and then create the publication, or I could do the initial 30 days and then continue to refine each design over a period of time as a mini brief between this brief and the publication. Ultimately I think the presentation of this work is key, so I don't want to be creating a publication where I am not happy with the content I have created. Great work is easier to make look good in a book than average or bad work.
Something that I don't want to do is to take this into Illustrator afterwards and then edit it to look better. The only editing I want to do is turning these straight into vectors without having to edit lines. I think if I gave myself the choice of that, I wouldn't work as hard at actually working on the hand drawn element. I would be relying on the digital side to refine the designs.
I think that this brief is going to be hard work and quite intense, but it is a skill I have been wanting to learn for a long time now so I shouldn't put it off any longer. I am looking forward to getting to work on it, but also a bit apprehensive because I know I won't be as good as I would like to be initially.
