Brief 1 - Packaging Research

As there are a lot of different elements that need to be packaged for the bakery, I did a bit of research into the kinds of packaging that I could go with. I think for bread it's quite simple packaging but when it comes to cakes and biscuits, I obviously need something that has a bit more structure so these products won't get crushed.

As I need a couple of different styles of packaging, something I need to consider is continuity and consistency across different paper types/materials. The papers aren't all going to be exactly the same colour etc. so this is something that I need to be careful about.

The Bread and Butter Bakery
This work has a couple of different types of packaging, but also uses different designs depending on the colour. The darker coloured packaging have just the logo, whereas the lighter colours have a pattern. It is clear that the packagings are all slightly different in colour, however it does still work well.

Violeta

This packaging is mainly made up of boxes, which would be quite a simple and consistent, and I could use the same stock and know the colours would all be the same etc. I think it's quite interesting that they've branded the bread bag instead of just having the logo/pattern. I like the small wraps around the individual bread buns, and the use of the stickers. I do think I would have a bit of trouble printing onto a stock thin enough for this as it wouldn't go through a printer well.

Mamulu. Birth.

The main thing about this packaging that I like is the use of tissue paper as well as the paper bags. I think adding this extra layer and contrasting against the bag works well and makes it look a much more luxurious. It also looks like there's small individual boxes for each bread/cake within this, so that is also something I could explore.

Sally Mills

This packaging is very consistent across the different types. While I like the consistency, I do think that having each packaging a bit individual would be a good thing as it would show that the branding is strong and can be put across a wide range of designs.

Betty's

Betty's uses a variety of packaging for their products. As they are a large bakery/cafe they have the funds to be able to create individual packaging for each product. These are all very different and aren't necessarily clearly linked, but they are all in the same style. I like the use of the plastic bag as wrapping. This is something that I could look into for the biscuits, as opposed to just a box or bag.

Breadshop

This packaging is very simple and all the same for different sized products. The branding is minimal but is effective. I do like the fact that there isn't anything printed on the tissue paper, and the branding is on the sticker used to hold it together. The way they've packaged the bread is also very professional and gives the impression of a high-end bakery.

I think that looking into a few different packaging designs has been helpful as it has shown me what is possible and what I like and don't like. At this point I quite like the idea of having a few different packaging ideas specifically for the different products. I also like the use tissue paper, and think I could definitely use this along with bags etc for the bread.
