Brief 2 - Jars

As I spent a lot of time constructing the packaging, Charlie took on the task of preparing the text and designs for the vinyl wraps on the jars, and the wraps to go around the boxes.

Starting with the jars, we have two of varying size which we have decided to use. We agreed on a size to create the vinyl to.

For the smaller jar we decided on 8cm in height, 10cm in width. This would be for the truffles. The larger jar we decided on 10cmX10cm. This would be for the cocoa powder.

Charlies designs:

The main thing that we wanted was consistency, so Charlie started the designs to work in the same way as the chocolate bar boxes, keeping the size of the fronts and backs consistent.

We had a discussion about these designs when they were done. The main concern that I had was that the text was too small for the vinyl to be cut. The text on the back is scaled down to fit, so was at about a 5pt, which is way too small.

We also agreed that the additional information on the front wasn't necessary, and just the brand logo and product name with the cocoa bean circle would be needed. Having just this means that they can be scaled up and made larger. I think the simpler approach works well.

For the back, I definitely knew the vinyl wouldn't cut it so small, so at this point we have decided to go with a clear sticker. We agreed to get rid of the cocoa bean circle and just scale the text up so it would be at a good enough size to read. We agreed to keep these two stickers the same sizes for each of the jars.

Following this, it was mentioned that the jars look like those in sweet shops and like the kind where a scoop would be involved to transfer the product into a smaller bag. We decided that we actually really liked this idea and it worked well because we were initially a little concerned about the size of the larger jar. We felt it was a bit too big for something you would just outright purchase.

With this change in mind, we decided on swapping the jars over, so the cocoa powder would be in the smaller jar and would be purchased as is. The truffles will be in the larger jar, and taken from it and put into a small gift box.

When it came to printing, it was said that the vinyl cutter would still have a bit of trouble cutting the front design how we wanted it, so to simplify it a bit more and make it larger would be what we needed to do to get a better looked cut and design.

We discussed how we could move forward with this. There was no question about needing to use the vinyl because it is the only thing that will work on the jars and fit in with the brand.

I suggested that we scrap the back sticker, because that probably wouldn't work. Instead of this, we move the cocoa bean circle to the back, and have just the brand name and product name on the front.

It was confirmed that this would work, however the 'established 2015' would probably not work, so we decided to drop this from the logo. We didn't want to do this, but we don't want it on the jar if it's not going to look right.

In terms of the product information, we decided that we will create a label that will be attached to the jar with string or ribbon. This way we know it is there, is visible and doesn't compromise the design of the jar wrap.

Applying the vinyl:

We are really pleased with the way these have turned out in the end. We had been a little worried that it wouldn't look consistent with the last minute changes we had to make, however it definitely works really well and the simplicity of it looks great. We have agreed that we will definitely create tags for them both.
